Eine kleine (mathematische) Nachtmusik

Performance by Erich Neuwirth

Main hall or lecture hall A, 20:30

More than 2000 years ago the Pythagoreans found out about the relationship between consonant intervals and simple fractions. In the 1700's finally a method was found to tune a keyboard instrument in such a way that all major and minor scale could be played in a musically sensible way. The presentation will explain the mathematical theory of musical tunings, concentrating on Pure, Pythagorean, Meantone, and Well Temperament and illustrate the differences with music examples from different historical periods. We will discuss the relevance of different tuning systems from a musical and from a mathematical point of view, and we will illustrate all these concepts with audio examples.
