Summary

The specifity of central Poland in the light of discoveries of roman industrial imports, in ”Prace i Materialy Muzeum Archeologicznego i Etnograficznego w Lodzi” 32,1985, 21-29.

Trought archaeological investigations of central Poland have been started relatively late,its specificity with respect to numerous finds of terra sigillata and metal vessels became apparent already in the thirties of this century.The intensive development of investigation after 1945 has made this phenomenon still more pronounced.The comparision with other parts of this country,central Poland is characterised by the greatest density of roman silver vessels and the

imitations by the greatest density of finds of bronze vessels and by numerous finds of terra sigillata.On the other part imported broches are relatively numerous.The more interesting is the occurrence in the  middle rivers Warta and Bzura basins of a number of imports not met anywhere in Poland and of a still greater number of finds not met in the whole northern part of the ”barbaricum”.The largest numeber of these finds occured in four richly furnished graves at Leg Piekarski(dep.Poznan)

   Looking for the reasons of these phenomena,the Autor arrives at the conclusion that central Poland eas supplied with articles by Roman marchants who travelled by two eastern branches of the ”amber route”.One branch led from the region of Opole towards the upper river Warta,and another from the region of Kalisz to Leg Piekarski,distr.Turek,where it met the former.Farther on. the route could have led to the upper river Bzura in the environs of Gledzianowek and then northwards to which the river Skrwa joins the Vistula.Going upstream the Vistula course one could reach the Vistula couast on the Baltic Sea.

   Jerzy Wielowiejski discusses with Kazimerz Jazdzewski the subject of dating the four rich graves from Leg Piekarski, the oldest of which date from the second half of the 1 st century A.D. and the latest from the end of the 1 st or early 2 nd century.These graves point to the existence of centres of tribal organisations or tribal unions, the chiefs of which were the ones to profit most from the far-flung trade.
