Valentinian II.

Valentinian II., eigentlich Flavius Valentinianus, (371-392), römischer Kaiser (375-392), Sohn Valentinians I. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters 375 wurde Valentinian II. zum Augustus über den mittleren Teil des Reichs, also über Italien, Illyrien und Africa, ausgerufen. Er stand zunächst unter der Regentschaft seines Stiefbruders Gratian, der den Westteil des Reiches regierte, und nach Gratians Tod 383 unter dem Einfluss seiner Mutter Justina, einer Anhängerin des Arianismus. 387 floh er vor dem Usurpator Maximus in den Osten; nach dem Sieg Theodosius' I., des Kaisers der Osthälfte des Römischen Reiches, über Maximus 388 konnte Valentinian zurückkehren. Am 15. Mai 392 wurde Valentinian auf Befehl seines von Theodosius eingesetzten Beraters und Heermeisters Arbogast in Vienne ermordet oder von Arbogast in den Freitod getrieben.

Valentinian II (371-392), Western Roman emperor (375-392), the son and successor of Valentinian I. He shared the first eight years of his reign with his half-brother Gratian; his share of the Western Empire comprised North Africa, Italy, and part of Illyricum. During his minority, his mother administered the government. In 387 he was driven from Italy by Magnus Clemens Maximus, who had arranged Gratian's death in 383. Valentinian then sought refuge with Theodosius I, Roman emperor of the East, who restored him to power in 388. Valentinian was murdered, probably by Arbogast (died 394), the Frankish general who then installed the puppet emperor Eugenius on the throne.

Valentiniano II (Treviri 371 - Vienne 392), imperatore romano d'Occidente (375-392), figlio e successore di Valentiniano I. Durante la minore età fu posto sotto la reggenza della madre Giustina. Nei primi otto anni di regno Valentiniano, che governava sull'impero d'Occidente - comprendente l'Africa settentrionale, l'Italia e parte dell'Illirico - condivise il potere con il fratellastro Graziano.
