Research Topics: Cultural Aspects of Human Values
Traditional psychology almost exclusively focussed on western culture, taking for granted that universal principles would sufficiently explain human experience and behaviour worldwide.
Similarly, till the turn of the millennium, empirical psychology largely avoided investigating areas of interest which might be suspected to reach beyond a conception of human nature strictly limited to a natural science approach. Conversely, a popular notion held that topics related to central life goals, spiritual or philosophical believes, or to the meaning of a person´s life cannot be examined adequately by scientific means.
In contrast, my research pertains to the theoretical basis and methodologically sound empirical study of
- human values, moral judgment and decision making, ethical issues, and spirituality
with special reference to
- cultural differences and similarities, national stereotypes, ethnic self- and other-images, intercultural dialogue, flight and migration (including clinical symptoms and coping behaviour in refugees).

Die traditionelle Psychologie hatte fast ausschließlich die westliche Kultur zum Gegenstand und nahm als selbstverständlich an, dass universelle Gesetzmäßigkeiten ausreichen würden, um menschliches Erleben und Verhalten weltweit zu erklären.
In ähnlicher Weise vermied es die empirische Psychologie bis zur Jahrtausendwende weitgehend, Interessensgebiete zu untersuchen, die im Verdacht stehen konnten, über eine strikt naturwissenschaftliche Sicht der menschlichen Natur hinauszugehen. Umgekehrt lautete eine populäre Annahme, dass Fragen im Zusammenhang mit zentralen Lebenszielen, spirituellen oder philosophischen Überzeugungen oder solche, die den Sinn des Lebens betreffen, mit wissenschaftlichen Methoden nicht adäquat untersucht werden können.
Im Gegensatz dazu betrifft meine Forschung die theoretische Begründung und methodisch einwandfreie empirische Untersuchung von
- Wertorientierungen, moralischem Urteilen und Entscheiden, ethischen Fragen und Spiritualität
mit besonderem Bezug zu
- kulturellen Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten, nationalen Stereotypen, ethnischen Selbst- und Fremdbildern, interkulturellem Dialog, Flucht und Migration (einschließlich klinischer Symptome und Coping bei Flüchtlingen).
